Harnessing the Power of Data for Gender Equality

2019

This report from Equal Measures 2030 (EM2030) introduces the SDG Gender Index, which is the most comprehensive tool to measure gender equality aligned explicitly to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Gender equality is linked to the entire development agenda, so the index is an important indicator of the progress and problem areas that impact broader development gains. The index builds on other foundational tools which measure gender equity, and this inaugural report is designed to present baseline data as EM2030 continues to scale its work and coverage. The report notes that many countries have achieved key milestones toward gender equality in a number of the SDGs, including education, health, access to basic services, and codifying legal rights; however, none of the 129 countries studied has fully achieved the promise of gender equality envisioned by the 2030 agenda. Data are presented by country and by region, with “deep dives” that offer analysis of regional challenges. The report also provides a global picture on key issues that cut across SDGs (such as gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and economic empowerment and financial inclusion), information about the myriad and intersecting forms of gender-based discrimination, and recommendations for action. Users can also explore the gender index data in EM2030’s Gender Advocates Data Hub, which includes data, visualizations, and impact stories.
