Lancet Commission 2019: Protecting Physical Health in People with Mental Illness

2019

This Lancet Commission examines the increased risk of physical disease experienced by those with mental illnesses—a risk that has been observed across mental health illnesses in all countries. The comorbidity of physical and mental diseases leads to a lower life expectancy, while also increasing the personal, social, and economic costs of mental illness. The Commission (1) establishes the most important aspects of the comorbidity and mortality that have transdiagnostic applications; (2) highlights the common factors that create disparities in physical health; (3) presents possible integrated policy actions and clinical services; and (4) identifies areas of interest for future research (e.g., digital technologies, drug discovery).
