Outbreak of U.S. Vaping-Related Lung Injury, August 2019-January 2020

2020

This article in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report summarizes what is known about the U.S. outbreak of e-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI). 82 percent of 2,668 EVALI patients hospitalized between August 2019 and January 2020 used products with THC; many of these THC-containing products contained Vitamin E acetate as an additive. Though U.S. cases peaked in mid-September, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that individuals avoid THC vaping products and notes that current evidence is not sufficient to rule out other chemicals that may have contributed EVALI cases.
