Data Visualization: Youth Disconnection in America

2023

This data visualization produced by Measure of America of the Social Science Research Council visualizes the data and information found in Measure of America’s most recent report, Ensuring an Equitable Recovery: Addressing COVID-19's Impact on Education. Using data from 2021, the interactive presents the key findings on disconnected youth—young people between ages 16 and 24 who are not in school and are not working—and shows how youth disconnection rates declined from the rapid increase seen in 2020 but are still elevated compared to 2019. Users can engage with the tool’s series of graphs, figures, interactive maps, and short descriptions that present statistics, data, and trends about disconnected youth and specific measures to break it down. The interactive presents data on youth disconnection at the national level by race, ethnicity, gender, and several other indicators, including health insurance, education level, family structure, disability, and more. Users can also view data by state, congressional district, metro area, and county. The tool includes an interactive map illustrating youth disconnection in eight different community types based on microdata geographic areas: opportunity-rich urban America, opportunity-rich suburban America, well-connected rural America, moderately connected urban America, moderately connected suburban America, struggling rural America, urban opportunity deserts, and rural opportunity deserts. Users can read the full report, view more information about the methodology for the data, and take the Youth Disconnection Quiz to assess their knowledge and understanding.
