Lancet Series 2023: Maternal Health in the Perinatal Period and Beyond
2023
This Lancet Series analyzes maternal health and its determinants worldwide, focusing on improving outcomes across pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and beyond. Considering stagnating maternal mortality statistics, the authors highlight the need for a multi-pronged approach to maternal health that expands beyond focusing solely on maternal survival, calling for strategies that consider the social, lifestyle, and systemic factors that affect maternal outcomes– before, during, and after pregnancy. To make progress toward the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for maternal mortality worldwide, the authors urge new, comprehensive, human-rights approaches that address the contexts and factors that lead to poor maternal health outcomes worldwide.
Series articles include:
- A Global Analysis of the Determinants of Maternal Health and Transitions in Maternal Mortality
- Vulnerabilities and Reparative Strategies During Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Postpartum Period: Moving From Rhetoric to Action
- Neglected Medium-term and Long-term Consequences of Labour and Childbirth: A Systematic Analysis of the Burden, Recommended Practices, and a Way Forward
- Towards a Better Tomorrow: Addressing Intersectional Gender Power Relations to Eradicate Inequities in Maternal Health
The Series is accompanied by commentary articles and an editorial piece.
