World Water Development Report 2024: Water for Prosperity and Peace

2024

This report, published by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on behalf of UN-Water, examines how equitable access to water resources and safe water supply could promote peace and prosperity, accelerating progress toward stability and sustainable development worldwide. In the wake of global shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, and growing inequalities, safe drinking water and sanitation remain crucial and this report explores the significance of water in people’s livelihoods and how it can be used as a tool for peace.

The report outlines the state of the world’s freshwater resources and current progress toward the Sustainable Development Goal targets for water and sanitation (SDG 6), and analyzes indicators connecting water to prosperity and peace. The report primarily explores perspectives from various water-dependent sectors, such as food and agriculture, the environment, human settlements, industry and energy, human health, and climate change. The report includes regional perspectives and practices and discusses responses to develop an equitable water future that ensures water is protected and sustained for all– through governance, education, science and information, and more.

The report is accompanied by an executive summary and a fact sheet of key statistics and figures.
