GBD 2021: Global Age-Sex-Specific Mortality, Life Expectancy, and Population Estimates in 204 Countries and Territories and 811 Subnational Locations, 1950–2021, and the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic

2024

This article from The Lancet presents global age-sex-specific mortality, life expectancy, and population estimates in 204 countries and 811 subnational locations from 1990 to 2021. The article includes a specific focus on changes in mortality and life expectancy due to the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, finding that age standardized mortality rates increased during the COVID-19 period between 2020 and 2021. Between 1950 and 2021, the authors find that global life expectancy at birth increased by 22.7 years; however, this historic trend reversed due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, with global life expectancy declining between 2019 and 2021.

Led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, GBD is a global effort with researchers from over 150 countries and territories. IHME and other partnering organizations have developed numerous resources to disseminate and visualize the findings of the GBD studies, data visualizations and interactives, country profiles, policy reports, research articles, infographics, and the GBD Results Tool, which allows users to search GBD data.
