World Population Ageing 2020: Highlights

2020

This report, prepared by the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), presents new estimates of patterns and trends in the living arrangements of older people across the world and discusses susceptibility of this population to COVID-19. Globally, the number of older persons is rising substantially, and the aging population makes up a growing proportion of nearly every country. These demographic trends, driven by reduced fertility rates and improvements in survival, have implications for the health sector as well as for labor and financial markets, housing and transportation infrastructure, social protection programs, and family structures.

The World Population Ageing report series is prepared by the Population Division of the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA). This report is the sixth in the series and updates earlier editions published since 2002. It is accompanied by a brief of key messages, a population fact sheet, and slides.
