Population Age Structure

2020

In the third of three videos on basic population dynamics, Professor Sue J. Goldie discusses the age structure of populations. She walks students through a graphical representation of a population pyramid, showing the male and female population plotted by age. Using Bangladesh as a stylized example, a comparison is made between the shape of the population pyramid now, to the shape of the pyramid in 1960 (high fertility and high mortality rates) and the shape projected for 2050 (low fertility and low mortality rates). Students can visualize how the dependency ratio's change over time, as the transition from a "youth bulge" to an "aging population" occurs.

This video is preceded by a video on populaton dynamics and population growth, both shown below.

Companion resources include selected reports and articles, data portals and interactives, country profiles, and a resource pack of curated background materials.
