PRB World Population 2023: Lesson Plan

2023

This lesson plan from the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) accompanies the 2023 World Population Data Sheet and aims to develop the data literacy skills and knowledge of geography for students in grades 6-12. The lesson plan contains three activities: the first allows students to explore the World Population Data Sheet in-depth, answering questions on indicators like population sizes and death rates; the second allows students to practice completing a country profile by examining country-specific population data; and the third allows students to engage with the data sheet to create a choropleth map, which uses color to represent quantitative data. Educators can effectively use this lesson plan in online, hybrid, or physical learning environments. All resources - the data sheet, country profile worksheet, and country outline map - are open-access and freely available.

The 2023 World Population Data Sheet, published annually by the Population Research Bureau (PRB), provides the latest data on key population, health, and environment indicators for major world regions and over 200 countries and territories. This year’s data sheet has a special focus on climate vulnerability and resilience, examining indicators such as the number of projected deaths due to temperature changes, food insecurity, and the number of internally displaced persons due to disasters. Overall, the data sheet provides an overview of the demographic trends that shape our world of 8.01 billion people and further illuminates future projected trends.
