Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes

2018

This report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine provides a comprehensive and systematic review of the evidence about e-cigarettes and health. It describes the toxicology of nicotine and other ingredients of e-cigarettes; discusses their potential for dependence and abuse as well as their negative effects on cardiovascular diseases, cancers, respiratory diseases, oral diseases, developmental and reproductive health, and injuries and poisonings; and explores the public health implications of e-cigarettes among youth and adults. The report highlights evidence gaps that are priorities for future research and makes recommendations to improve the quality of this research. It was produced at the request of the Center for Tobacco Products of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The report is accompanied by several supplemental publications, including report highlights, recommendations, and conclusions organized by level of evidence and by outcome; the report’s chapters are also available for individual download.
