Country Profiles: Global Trends in Prevalence of Tobacco Use, 2000-2025

2021

These country profiles accompany the World Health Organization’s Global Report on Trends in Prevalence of Tobacco Use, 2000-2025: Fourth Edition. Each country profile summarizes the latest data and projections on tobacco smoking prevalence by age, sex, and data source. These projections are intended to guide governments, policymakers, and regulators in developing appropriate tobacco control measures.

The Global Report on Trends in Prevalence of Tobacco Use 2000-2025, Fourth Edition summarizes the latest global trends in tobacco use. While the worldwide prevalence of tobacco smoking has decreased since 2000, eight million people died from a tobacco-related disease in 2019. In 2000, around a third of the global population aged 15 years and older were using tobacco products. By 2020, the prevalence of tobacco use had fallen to 22.3% and is expected to continue declining to around 20% by 2025. The publication aims to contribute to the global monitoring of Sustainable Development Goal 3.a, which calls for strengthening the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control around the world.
