The FDA Has Officially Raised the Age to Buy Tobacco Products to 21

2019

This article in Vox describes the U.S. policy decision in December 2019 to raise the minimum age to buy tobacco products—including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and vaping products with nicotine—from 18 to 21. This move represents a months-long bipartisan process, emerging from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and also through an end-of-year federal spending bill in Congress. Public health professionals are hopeful that this federal law will help prevent teens—the population most likely to become addicted—from smoking or vaping nicotine products.
