No Time to Wait: Securing the Future from Drug-Resistant Infections

2019

This report, published by the United Nations Interagency Coordination Group on Antimicrobial Resistance, underscores that the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in countries of all income levels is a global health crisis which poses a threat to achieving Universal Health Coverage, as well as realizing other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Currently, drug-resistant diseases cause at least 700,000 deaths across the globe annually, with an expected increase to 10 million annual global deaths if no action is taken. The report collaborators call upon actors across all disciplines to engage in the One Health response, in which multiple sectors work cohesively and synergistically to achieve better public health outcomes across humans, animals, plants, food and the environment. The authors of this report recommend accelerating progress in countries; innovating to secure the future; collaborating across sectors, civil society groups, and organizations for more effective action; investing for a sustainable response; and strengthening accountability and global governance in order to secure the future of millions of people. This report is accompanied by a summary of recommendations and key messages—available in seven different languages—discussion papers, and other background documents.
