School Violence and Bullying: Global Status Report

2019

This report from United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) provides global and regional data about violence and bullying in schools. It first examines current prevalence and trends in the status of violence and bullying, including factors, types of violence, changes over time, consequences and regional investigations. The report then highlights the characteristics of effective national responses to the issue in the education sector, and explores how violence in schools relate to violence in society. Some of its reported findings include that 32 percent of students have been bullied at school in the last month, school bullying has decreased in about half of the countries for which data is available and increased or stayed the same in the other half, and that cyberbullying has been steadily increasing in years past. At the national level, the report recommends implementing policy frameworks that emphasize safe learning environments, cultivating partnerships between the education sector and other related sectors, taking an evidence-based stance on effective practices, and providing support and/or training for teachers to respond to situations involving bullying.
