Monitoring the Building Blocks of Health Systems: A Handbook of Indicators and Their Measurement

2010

This report from the World Health Organization underlines the importance of accurate data collection so that decision makers can track health progress and performance. While significant progress has been made in interventions related to maternal and child mortality, as well as the reduction in overall mortality and illness due to HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, these gains have not been universal. In order to address these inequities, many programs are now involving the strengthening of health systems in their interventions. This report identifies the need for sound data to track health system improvements and how these improvements impact health indicators. The authors introduce key component and related indicators, describe possible sources of information and the available measurement strategies, as well as propose core indicators.
