Social Determinants of Health for Rural People

2022

This guide from the Rural Health Information Hub summarizes the obstacles and challenges rural residents face in relation to their social determinants of health—the circumstances in which they are born, grow up, work, and age that are shaped by social, economic, and political forces. The guide is organized as a list of 18 frequently asked questions that address the impact of rural differences related to specific social determinants of health, including housing, employment, poverty, food insecurity, transportation, broadband access, and education. The questions also explore current policies and programs addressing social determinants of health in rural areas; the additional challenges minority populations face in staying healthy; and the intersections with legal and health care systems.
