Health Care Disparities Among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth

2017

This article from Cureus provides an overview of health disparities for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth. As of 2017, 3.5 percent of Americans identified as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and LGBTQ+ youth experience higher rates of substance use, sexually transmitted infections, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, bullying, and mental health issues compared to the general population. This population receives lower quality medical care due to stigma and provider insensitivity to the needs of this community. This article highlights the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth and seeks to enhance awareness among physicians and other healthcare providers.
