Achieving Racial and Ethnic Equity in U.S. Health Care: A Scorecard of State Performance

2021

This data publication from The Commonwealth Fund evaluates the performance of state health systems across racial and ethnic groups in the United States, examining health equity within and between states. The scorecard provides a summary score of each state health system for five racial and ethnic groups in the U.S: Black, white, Latinx/Hispanic, American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN), and Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations. Scorecard data was analyzed across 24 indicators of health system performance and grouped into three domains: 1) health outcomes, 2) health care access, and 3) quality and use of health care services. Along with health system performance scores for each state, users can view interactive data visualizations by state and race/ethnicity for mortality rates, diabetes-related deaths, uninsurance rates, cost-related barriers to healthcare, and more. The scorecard finds significant health and healthcare disparities between white and Black, Latinx/Hispanic, and AIAN groups in nearly all states in the United States. The publication discusses recommendations and policy priorities toward ensuring access to care and equal treatment in care delivery for racial and ethnic groups in the U.S., and the design of an equitable, antiracist healthcare system.

In addition to the scorecard report, users can download individual state profiles, equity profiles by race/ethnicity, and the data figures included in the report.
