Abortion Worldwide 2017: Uneven Progress and Unequal Access

2018

This report from the Guttmacher Institute provides information and summarizes trends in the incidence of abortion and unintended pregnancy worldwide, also examining abortion laws, safety of abortion provision, and barriers to accessing safe abortion care and contraception. In 2010-2014, 36 abortions occurred each year per 1,000 women aged 15-44 in developing regions, compared with 27 in developed regions.

As of 2017, 42 percent of women of reproductive age live in countries where abortion is highly restricted. A vast majority of abortions result from unintended pregnancies; 56 percent of unintended pregnancies end in abortion. The report further documents the broader impacts of unsafe abortion on women's wellbeing, emphasizing that it is every woman's right to decide when and how many children to have.
