Deciding Value for Money: Improving Prenatal Genetic Screening in Ontario

This case study describes recommendations by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Canada on how to integrate advances in prenatal genetic screenings for chromosomal conditions in Ontario, Canada while maintaining a centralized, standardized, high-quality system across the province. The case provides an introduction to prenatal genetic screening and fetal chromosomal conditions, describes the current screening system as well as new technological advances, outlines the current integration of the NIPT screening option and challenges faced by providers and patients, and provides an economic evaluation and recommendation regarding the integration of noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) screening into Ontario’s prenatal screening program.

This case also includes guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. This case is part of a 13-case collection written by students in the inaugural MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be copied and used free of charge without permission for any educational uses by an accredited educational institution.
