Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais, Partners In Health in Haiti

2015

This case study describes the application of Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing (TDABC) at a new tertiary hospital, in Mirebelais, Haiti, operated by Partners in Health. A project team mapped the clinical processes for use in estimating the direct costs of personnel, equipment, and facilities related to obstetric and breast cancer care. The resulting analysis revealed opportunities to optimize resources and reduce costs by establishing more efficient sterilization procedures and shifting administrative responsibilities away from high-cost physicians.

This case, developed by the Harvard Business School, is part of The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery Teaching Cases, Volume One. The Commission created these materials for mutual learning about the challenges and best practices for developing surgical systems, especially in resource poor settings. The cases can be read individually or used in the classroom.
