Surgical Quality Assurance Database (SQUAD) in Uganda, Part B

2015

This case study explores how collected data at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda can be used to highlight gaps in surgical care and training, provide feedback to physicians and staff, and stimulate original research at the institution. After 24 months of developing, refining, and implementing the SQUAD (Surgical Quality Assurance Database) electronic medical record database, the hospital team began to explore how best to use and communicate the data collected. This case also has a companion Part A, which describes the challenges of setting up a medical record system in a public hospital in Uganda.

This case, developed by Babson University, is part of The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery Teaching Cases, Volume One. The Commission created these materials for mutual learning about the challenges and best practices for developing surgical systems, especially in resource poor settings. The cases can be read individually or used in the classroom.
