World Malaria Report 2023

2023

This report is the flagship malaria publication from the World Health Organization (WHO), updated annually to summarize the information received from malaria-endemic countries and national malaria control programs. It assesses global and regional malaria trends, highlights progress toward achieving global targets, and discusses opportunities and challenges in controlling and eliminating the disease.

The 2023 edition of the report finds that in 2022, the global number of malaria cases reached 249 million – a significant increase from the estimated number of cases prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report tracks investments in malaria programs and research and documents the progress of malaria interventions across key areas: prevention, diagnosis, treatment, elimination, and surveillance. This year’s report includes a specific chapter on climate change, analyzing the threats climate change poses to the global malaria response. The report highlights how increasing global temperatures and extreme weather events spurred by climate change, such as flooding and heatwaves, significantly impact malaria transmission and the disease burden. It also discusses additional drivers of malaria epidemics, including humanitarian crises and biological threats. Detailed annexes provide information on data sources and methods; regional profiles; and data tables about malaria policies, funding for malaria control, and reported malaria cases and deaths.

The World Malaria Report is published every year, providing the global health community with a comprehensive overview of progress in the fight against malaria. Resources released along with the annual report include an overview of key points and regional data and trends
