Making Oral Health Care More Palatable

2018

This case study follows two public health professionals as they reform the way oral health care is being provided in a local community health center (CHC) in Ontario, by shifting to a patient-centered care approach. CHCs are not-for-profit, community-governed, values-based organizations providing inter-professional services to promote health, prevent illness and injury, and build capacity. The two professionals find that the cost of dental care was the leading reason preventing patients from accessing this service and determine that they must create a mission and vision for their new coalition to address this issue, garner support, maintain financial stability, and engage stakeholders. This case would be suitable for use in classroom discussions about oral health, building coalitions, health promotion in a community, and health equity.

The case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 17-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
