The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is the specialized international health agency of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Americas. It works with its 51 member countries and territories to address communicable and noncommunicable diseases and their causes, to strengthen health systems, and to respond to emergencies and disasters by partnering with local ministries of health, government agencies, civil society organizations, and other partners. PAHO aims to support the right of everyone in these countries to good health, to ensure that people live longer, healthier lives, and to promote sustainable development among communities and families in the Americas.
PAHO’s work focuses on communicable and noncommunicable diseases, equity, health systems, and health services. Its main areas of work are: communicable diseases and environmental determinants of health; evidence and intelligence for action in health; family, health promotion, and life course; gender, equity, and cultural diversity; health emergencies; health systems and services; noncommunicable diseases and mental health. PAHO provides information about each of the countries and centers where it works and collaborates, offering key demographic and health information, news, and areas of focus for each location. Its resource portal includes major publications organized by subject, type, and date, a data portal, epidemiological alerts about international health events affecting the countries and territories in the Americas, documents on financing and strategy, and additional information on the Sustainable Health Agenda for the Americas. PAHO also maintains a media portal with news, press releases, stories of individuals and public health leaders, and other campaigns and initiatives.
