The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids

2017

This report, published by The National Academies Press, reviews the scientific research published since 1999 about the health impacts of cannabis and cannabinoids(cannabis-derived products, including marijuana). The report explores the therapeutic effects of cannabis, as well as the risks associated with cannabis use for numerous diseases and injuries, including specific cancers, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory diseases. It also reviews the evidence related to cannabis’ effect on developing mental health disorders, including schizophrenia and other psychoses, and the relationship between cannabis use and the abuse of other drugs, such as tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs. Finally, the report discusses the challenges to conducting rigorous cannabis research, and proposes ways to expand and improve research and data collection efforts.
