Teleophthalmology Screening Economics

2016

This case outlines the economic challenges of providing vision care in public health programs across Canada. It illustrates this dilemma through the case of an ophthalmologist who wants to advocate for a teleophthalmology screening program. The case summarizes vision care status in Canada, economic evaluation concepts, cost-effectiveness analysis, and health care decision-making. This case would be suitable for use in a health economics course, to provide real life situations that facilitate understanding of its dominant theoretical content.

The case includes guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is the second in an 11-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
