Impact of Community-Led Sanitation on Women's Health in Urban Slums

2016

This evidence report from the Institute for Development Studies examines a study of women’s access to sanitation through a Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) program. Focusing on the slums of Kalyani in the West Bengal state of India, the study follows the transformation of these slums into the first Open Defecation Free (ODF) town in India. Using this case, the report identifies far-reaching benefits of the CLTS approach, from the immediate effects on sanitation and hygiene to the indirect improvement in the socio-psychological well-being and empowerment of the women living in Kalyani.
