2021 Food Insecurity in Africa

This report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provides a regional overview of food insecurity and nutrition in Africa. In 2020, an estimated 281.6 million people faced hunger across the continent, representing more than one-fifth of the region’s population. This year’s report provides the most recent statistics and trends for undernourishment, food insecurity, and malnutrition as outlined by the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 targets for ending hunger globally. The report provides prevalence estimates for stunting, wasting, and overweight indicators for children under five, along with data on anemia in women of reproductive age. The report also includes statistical tables and figures for additional nutrition indicators, including obesity, breastfeeding, and low birthweight. The report includes comprehensive data tables that provide prevalence estimates for each nutrition indicator by country and a glossary that defines food security and nutrition terms utilized in the report.
