Great Decisions

2024

Great Decisions, supported by the Foreign Policy Association, is America’s largest discussion program on world affairs. The Great Decisions program highlights eight critical foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. The program model involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book, watching a DVD, and meeting in a Discussion Group to discuss critical global issues. Program materials include glossaries, news items, and readings on selected topics relevant to global health, from prospects for Afghanistan and Pakistan (2017), international migration (2016), and climate geopolitics (2016) to human trafficking (2015) and food insecurity (2014).

Discussion groups are held across the U.S. and in schools across the country, students using the Great Decisions modeldiscuss and debate each issue and complete a national opinion ballot to communicate their views to Congress and the White House. Educational goals include building global competence, improving knowledge of geography, promoting civic participation, fostering a comprehensive understanding of political affairs, and providing an opportunity for students to engage in critical thinking skills.
