Asia-Pacific Migration Data Report 2020

2021

This report published by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) presents the most recent data on migration dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region and examines how the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic affected migration patterns in 2020. The pandemic caused an economic crisis, putting health care access, job and economic security, and food security at risk, and strict national lockdowns made migrants especially vulnerable. Throughout COVID-19, 29 out of 40 countries, territories, and areas in the Asia-Pacific region experienced internal movement restrictions, and the region overall had more stringent government responses than the global average. The report discusses migration policy, provides migration statistics on emigration and immigration, breaks down dynamics of labour migration, forced migration, and return migration, and examines specific vulnerabilities that arose throughout COVID-19 such as food security and climate change. It also assesses progress towards the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, and the Migration Governance Indicators.
