Global Estimates of Modern Slavery

2022

This report published by the International Labor Organization (ILO), Walk Free, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) presents global and regional estimates of modern slavery. Modern slavery includes people forced to work or marry against their will. In 2021, an estimated 50 million people were in situations of modern slavery—or 27.6 million people in forced labor and 22 million in forced marriages worldwide. Since the previous global estimates of modern slavery were published in 2017, there has been an increase of 9.3 million people in modern slavery—a situation worsened by economic and social shocks driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, and increased armed conflict worldwide. The report disaggregates the data by region, gender, and age and identifies key policy priorities for expanding social protections and addressing forced labor and forced marriage around the globe. The report is accompanied by an executive summary.
