Global Health Observatory Data Portal: Universal Health Coverage

2024

This data portal from the World Health Organization (WHO) tracks progress towards universal health coverage (UHC) around the world. It is powered by data in the WHO’s Global Health Observatory and presents data visualizations on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.8, which aims to “achieve universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health-care services, and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all.” The inclusion of UHC in the SDGs presents an opportunity for countries to strengthen health systems, catalyze progress towards other health-related targets, and establish a comprehensive approach to population health.

Under “Related Indicators,” additional data sets are provided on topics surrounding financial protection in health, ensuring health equity, and covering essential health services, such as reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health; infectious disease treatment and prevention; prevalence and screening for noncommunicable diseases; and service capacity and access to health care and essential medicines. Users can click on these individual data sets to see data at the country level or aggregated by income group or WHO region, with a wide range of visualization types that can be viewed, shared, and downloaded.

Users interested in data supporting UHC may also find the Global Health Workforce Statistics Database useful, as it provides data to support SDG3c, which sets a target to "substantially increase health financing and the recruitment, development, training and retention of the health workforce in developing countries."
