The State of Environmental Migration 2020

2021

This report, presented by The Hugo Observatory of the University of Liège, assesses the changing dynamics of environment- and climate-related migration throughout five regions: Africa, The Americas, and The Caribbean, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. The report enhances understanding of natural disasters —sudden and slow natural onset events— and their links with human mobility, examining specific case examples of these linkages worldwide. For example, the report examines drought in Somalia, human migration in the aftermath of the Kerala floods, floods and displacement in Italy, the Australian bushfire, and the impact of an industrial disaster in Brazil. The report also highlights key policy initiatives and programs designed to address these intersections of climate change and human mobility worldwide.
