Levels and Trends in Child Mortality Report 2023

2024

This data publication from the United Nations Inter-Agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME) provides the latest child mortality rates worldwide, from newborns to adolescents. The report presents estimates of under-five, infant, and neonatal mortality rates in 2022, as well as estimates for youth aged 15-24 years. This year’s report finds that annual under-five deaths dropped to 4.9 million in 2022–a new low. While global under-five mortality rates have declined by more than 50% since 2000, the death toll of newborns and children under 5 remains high, especially from preventable or treatable causes. The patterns of mortality reflect persistent inequalities: children and youth in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia continue to experience the highest risks of death.

The report is accompanied by interactive graphs showing trends in newborn and adolescent mortality around the world and inequity among and within countries. Users can also view several datasets on various indicators related to child mortality.
