Teaching Pack: Exploring Health Through Art

2018

This teaching pack was developed by the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University and Tom Evans, visual art teacher and dean of faculty of the Cambridge School of Weston (CSW) in Massachusetts, during an extended collaboration between the two institutions. These lessons were the culminating components of a multi-part integrated studies course, piloted by CSW in spring 2016, which introduced students to an interdisciplinary global health framework, then incorporated global health concepts, ideas, resources, and tools with biological science, mathematics, art, and literature.

In particular, this teaching pack focuses on how visual methods of representation—from charcoal drawing to collage—can be leveraged in the classroom to thoughtfully engage with basic global health concepts. The materials include an instructor’s note, two lesson plans, and a glossary of terms, as well as companion videos featuring Evans and one of his students, Phyllis Pawa, reflecting on art as a pedagogical tool.
