Eye Care Clinics in Rural India: Healthcare and Social Transformation

2017

This case describes a humanitarian scale-up effort in rural India to improve affordable eye care services to poor villagers despite the preference of most ophthalmologists in India to work in urban health care settings. The case features the Tejas Eye Care Hospital (TEH) which serves rural tribal communities in Gujarat, India, and is operated by the Divyajyoti Trust. It includes a background of the Trust and its activities and services, the need for eye care in India, and the patients who come into TEH. It then details the challenges faced by the Trust and TEH moving forward, which include generating additional revenue to support its humanitarian goals, doing community-based research, and evaluating whether the Trust is staying true to its core principles.
