Women: At the Heart of the HIV Response for Children

2018

This report from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) describes how women and girls both bear the brunt of the HIV epidemic and are at the frontlines of response. The report illuminates progress made over the last decade—such as reducing mother-to-child transmission of HIV—as well as ongoing challenges that demand focused global attention—such as targeting gender disparities in disease burden and expanding HIV testing, prevention, and treatment among vulnerable populations. The report specifically highlights the need to focus on new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths among adolescents, a population that has not experienced the same progress as children worldwide. In examining the potential of co-creating responses to the HIV epidemic with women, the report also includes 17 essays by women leaders fighting HIV, from activists living with HIV to policymakers and scientists.
