Progress on Drinking Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools: 2000-2021 Data Update

2022

This report from the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) presents national, regional, and global estimates for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in schools up to the year 2021. The report provides a comprehensive assessment of the progress toward the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of universal access to basic WASH in schools by 2030, finding that the world is not on track to universal coverage. Globally, 3 out of 10 schools did not have basic water or sanitation services in 2021, and 4 out of 10 schools lacked basic hygiene services. In addition to providing updated data on WASH in schools, the report highlights efforts to strengthen and prepare schools for future pandemics and assesses the status of WASH services that are accessible and inclusive for students with disabilities.

The report is accompanied by a data dashboard that includes visualizations displaying WASH data that can be explored by country. Users can also download the raw data from the report for further analysis.
