Country Profiles: Nurturing Care for Early Child Development

2021

These country profiles from Countdown to 2030: Women’s, Children’s & Adolescents’ Health share information about the status of the suite of laws, policies, services, and community support that caregivers need to provide young children with nurturing care. In addition to a summary of demographics and threats to early child development such as maternal mortality and poverty, each country profile assesses the landscape of nurturing care across the dimensions of health, nutrition, responsive caregiving, security and safety, and early learning. The profiles also indicate whether countries support policies and international conventions that facilitate positive environments for early childhood development, such as child and family social protections and a national minimum wage. The raw country data can be downloaded for further exploration.

The country profiles accompany Nurturing Care for Early Child Development: A Framework for Helping Children Survive and Thrive to Transform Health and Human Potential, a framework from the World Health Organization, United Children’s Fund, and the World Bank. The framework outlines why improvements to health and wellbeing must begin from pregnancy to age 3; major threats to early childhood development; how nurturing care protects children from the worst effects of adversity; and what families and caregivers need to provide nurturing care for young children. Other accompanying resources include country success stories and an executive summary.
