WHO Fact Sheet: Family Planning and Contraceptive Methods

This fact sheet from the World Health Organization provides key facts and findings on family planning and contraceptive methods worldwide. Of the 1.9 billion women of reproductive age (15–49 years) worldwide in 2019, 1.1 billion have a need for family planning: 270 million of these have an unmet need for contraception, and 842 million are using contraceptive methods. The sheet provides an overview of family planning and contraceptive methods and offers more specific data on mechanisms of action and effectiveness of contraceptive methods, including oral pills, implants, injectables, patches, vaginal rings, intrauterine devices, condoms, male and female sterilization, lactational amenorrhea methods, and withdrawal and fertility awareness-based methods.
