Gender Equality: Women's Rights in Review 25 Years After Beijing

2020

This report is a review of the Beijing Platform for Action agenda for gender equality and empowerment of women and girls, 25 years after its adoption in September 1995. The report shares progress and remaining challenges in advancement of gender equality and women’s rights in context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by evaluating six themes: inclusive development, prosperity, work; poverty eradication, social protection, social services; freedom from violence, stigma, stereotypes; participation, accountability, gender-responsive institutions; peaceful societies; and environmental conservation, climate action, and resilience-building. The report suggests a need for expansion of policies and interventions to continue with universal progress. The report specifically recommends focusing on supporting women’s movements, using technology to empower women and girls and enhance gender equality, and matching commitments to gender equality with financial resources.
