Characterizing Risk in Climate Change Assessments

2016

This report outlines a workshop conducted by the Board on Environmental Change and Society of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, which explores ways to frame the Fourth National Climate Assessment (NCAs) – assessments intended to inform the nation about “observed changes in climate, the current status of the climate, and anticipated trends for the future” – and subsequent NCA reports to include societal risks. By characterizing and communicating climate-related hazards, risks, and opportunities, these organizations hope to accurately inform federal agencies, citizens, communities, businesses, and decision makers so that they can catalyze action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce vulnerability to climate change, and increase resilience. The outline summarizes presentations on topics such as characterizing and communicating risk, introduces cases on methods and approaches for risk assessment and communication, and highlights points of discussion from the workshop.
