Monitoring Global Progress on Antimicrobial Resistance

2021

This joint report from the World Health Organization (WHO), World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) dissects global progress in addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) based on information from country self-assessment surveys. It examines the status of national action plans for AMR; multisectoral approaches to addressing AMR; avenues for strengthening the evidence base, reducing infection, optimizing antimicrobial use; and overall implementation and monitoring of AMR across 136 of 194 WHO Member States. Though the response rate was lower due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more countries have reached nationwide implementation on several indicators compared to previous years.

Overall results show that although more countries have action plans, only a small percentage have identified funding for their plans. In other words, 120 countries reported having a national plan, while only 27 countries had identified funding. Governments must ensure full implementation, funding, monitoring, and evaluation despite progress in planning to reach global goals. The report also underscores the need to improve animal, plant, and environmental surveillance to inform national action plans and broader monitoring and evaluation efforts. A data interactive accompanies the report, where users can explore country-level data.
