Using Technology to Advance Global Health

2018

This report from the National Academies Press (NAP) summarizes the proceedings of a public workshop designed to explore how technology can facilitate progress toward globally recognized health priorities. Attendees identified and explored major challenges and opportunities for developing and implementing digital health strategies within global, country, and local contexts and evaluated the case for cross-sector and cross-industry collaboration, engagement, and investment in digital health strategies. The workshop emphasized data and building data culture, notably the increasing opportunities for the use of social media to better involve citizens in health care and to provide peer-to-peer support, especially helpful for those who work in difficult and isolated conditions. Participants discussed how the health sector can be a catalyst in driving other sectors to adopt digital technologies, and what an ideal ecosystem of innovators should look like in order for successful digital health strategies and solutions to move forward.
