"School, Interrupted": School-Based Mental Health Interventions

2018

This case study focuses on a health promoter at the Great Lakes County Public Health Unit, recently tasked with planning and implementing a school-based mental health intervention for youth in her community. Finding that the mental health system is focused mainly on diagnosis and treatment rather than prevention and building of protective factors, she aims to build an intervention emphasizing mental health promotion in the elementary-school years to minimize risk factors and lower the likelihood of developing mental illness later in adulthood. This case is best suited for classroom discussions focusing about school-based mental health systems, program planning, stakeholder analysis, and implementation science.

The case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 17-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
