Big Comfy Couch: The Implementation of an LGBTQ2S+ Safe and Positive Space Within a Public Health Unit

2018

This case study relays information about ways to create a “Safe and Positive Space”—an organization that is open, welcoming, inclusive, equitable, and accessible to all sexual and gender diversities and whose policies and practices reflect a supportive environment and personnel for both clients and staff. This study highlights the importance of understanding the complexities of the social determinants of health and health equity, and the ways in which these concepts manifest themselves in the lives of vulnerable populations, specifically the LGBTQ2S+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer or Questioning, Two-Spirited) community. This case is best suited for classroom discussions focusing on LGBTQ2S+ health, social determinants of health, health equity for vulnerable populations, inclusive health policies, and culturally sensitive health care.

The case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 17-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
