Managing Expectations: Lyme Disease

2018

This case spotlights the president of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), expected to conduct a thorough analysis to formulate a plan on tackling the impact of and the issues surrounding Lyme disease in Canada. She is tasked with prioritizing Lyme Disease in the government’s agenda, which normally focuses on mental health and chronic disease prevention. This case analyzes situations in which leaders must assess various options in project implementation, understand processes, account for different viewpoints, and work collaboratively to attain a collective aim. This case would be suitable for use in classroom discussions about leadership in health initiatives, stakeholder relationships, prioritization, and evidence-based public health practice.

The case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 17-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
