Housing and Health: A Human Rights Approach to Wellbeing

2018

This case study analyzes effects of social determinants, such as housing and environment, on one’s health. The case follows the life of a woman who comes to the Health Justice Initiative—a medical-legal partnership which aims to improve client access to justice through direct services, legal education, and systemic advocacy—to seek out legal help for a human rights issue stemming from poor housing conditions impacting her both physically and mentally. This case would be suitable for use in classroom discussions on housing rights, law and health, and social determinants of health.

The case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 17-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
